“She didn’t read books so she didn’t know that she was the world and the heavens boiled down to one drop.”
-ZNH
I just re-read Their Eyes Were Watching God for the millionth time. It never gets old.

Goodness goodness, it’s been a few days huh? Feels like I haven’t been up to much, but I suppose I have. Aside from school, which I am somehow managing to get through without stress, I’ve been spending time with Mihon. It was his birthday last weekend and he organized a whole four day extravaganza to celebrate. We went out with his fam on Saturday to check out Dave and Busters, which was intimidating at first, but surprisingly fun. I haven’t played games like that since my 9th birthday at Discovery Zone…It was definitely a switch up from what I usually do on the weekends. After recovering from what felt like a five-day weekend, I finally started my research proposals, and met with a couple of professors about my thesis. I’m getting really excited! The proposal is really shaping up nicely. I hope I get the grant I’m applying for. Hmm….I also got NEW AMERYKAH, and as expected, it is the bomb. I like what she’s doing with the instrumentation on this album. Sort of Alice Coltrane-esque, but not quite. Telephone is my favorite track. Apparently, it is based on a story that Dilla’s mother told Ms. Badu. In his last days, Dilla, floating in and out of coherence was having conversations with people who weren’t physically present. He told his mother that ODB was telling him that when he got to the other side, he should not get on the red bus. Dilla said that Dirty told him to take the white bus…I thought that was fascinating. Anyway it’s a beautiful song and a sweet tribute.
Well, I have to run to class, but I just wanted to drop a lil update. Ta-ta loves!

having suffered through my chaucer paper last night and all this morning, i decided to treat myself to a tasty box of girl scout cookies. so i buy a box of samoas, eat a couple in class, share some with one of my classmates, and come home to realize that you only get fifteen friggin cookies in a box. at $3.50 a box, samoas (well, now they are called caramel deLites…) cost nearly 25 cents a piece. unbelievable! i knew i should have gotten thin mints…
in other news, it’s snowing. yuck.

so tonite for poetics hw, i had to write a poem that emphasizes barthes’ idea of the punctum in a personal photograph. here’s what i came up with. apologies for the ghetto macbook photo. i don’t have a scanner…
las dos
two hearts
soles scraped
painted shirts
and my breast carved
open to keep you
breathing my blood,
a sister/self
conjoined under
ruffles of laughter
(in this case the punctum is the soles of my shoes. hard to see! sorry!)

tonite i read the year of magical thinking. all of it. joan didion is a wonderful writer and the book is heartbreaking. i found myself sighing a lot, needing to take breaks from the emotional stress. and even now all i want to do is be with people and perhaps have a drink. she describes the loneliness of having a thought to discuss with someone who can’t respond. i think that’s what saddened me the most. i feel like crying. jeez.

For in the dew of little things, the heart finds its morning and is refreshed.”
